A Landscape in Layers

Forest Floor explores the relationship between texture, growth and natural ecosystem through a hand-tufted, mixed-media wall rug.

Varying shades of moss, olive and deep forest green are carved and layered to mimic a woodland canopy seen from above, with a dark still pool cutting through the centre like a forest clearing or watering hole. Clusters of high-pile, shaggy tufting rise from the surface like moss and lichen growth, while embedded natural coral and shell fragments sit across the piece like stone, fungus and found forest debris.

Crafted as a mixed-media sculptural work, the piece combines varied pile heights, tactile carved wool and organic embedded elements to give it a genuinely three-dimensional, living quality — closer to a piece of land brought indoors than a conventional rug.

Rather than functioning as a flat wall covering, the piece acts as a captured ecosystem—using texture, layered colour and embedded natural material to bring the depth and irregularity of a forest floor into architectural space.
